History of Caliopa

Caliopa is a spin-off company from the world renowned Photonics Research Group of imec and Ghent University (UGent) and aspires to become a market leader in optical transceivers for tele- and data communications networks. 

In 2008 imec and UGent decided to start an incubation project in the field of Silicon Photonics in preparing of creating a separate company. By spinning off a decade of expertise, imec and UGent wanted to be able to offer their thorough know‐how, expertise and IP complying to all commercial demands (yield, timing, cost, etc.).

In 2010 Caliopa was then incorporated by a number of researchers from the photonics research group and an experienced management team from the industry, backed by a consortium of investors. The company also ‘inherited’ a strong IP and know-how portfolio from the Photonics Research Group.
