Huawei Technologies Research & Development Belgium NV is a center of excellence for silicon photonics design and processing. Initially called Caliopa, it was created as a spin-off from the University of Gent and Imec in 2010 and then was acquired by Huawei in 2013. Huawei is the global No.2 telecom solution provider and uses approximately one sixth of all photonics components produced in the world. Huawei aims to significantly reduce the cost of these components by investing aggressively in silicon photonics research and development and implementing solutions based on this technology. Huawei R&D Belgium Caliopa team is at the heart of this research and development. Silicon Photonics has achieved excellent results monolithically integrating high performance passives, various modulators and detectors but monolithic integration of laser devices is still some way from production. In order to address this Huawei has different programs whose goal is to deliver a laser-silicon photonics chip interface which is both low cost and compatible with non-hermetic packaging. For each approach modifications to the silicon photonics chip are required to provide the ‘handles’ necessary to enable the various low cost packaging solutions. A position has now been created for a Senior Process Integration and Development Engineer Laser interfacing to take responsibility for the development activities on the silicon photonics platform related to these different interface solutions. Huawei Technologies R&D Belgium N.V. is headquartered in Gent, Belgium and silicon photonics products are fabricated by different foundries in Europe. Although the role is nominally based in Gent this work will be done in close collaboration with a Huawei foundry partner in Europe and it is expected that the job will require extended periods based at this foundry.

Responsibilities will include:

a) Working with the responsible optical designer to understand the optical designs behind the various concepts and translating this into process tolerances for the silicon photonics (SiP) chip

b) Working with the silicon photonics foundry partner to establish an appropriate process flow required to create the required structures for each concept

c) Working with the III-V laser team to ensure that the features on the laser are compatible with what is designed on the SiP chip and that tolerances match and are consistent

d) Together with the process engineers from the foundry partner develop and qualify the various process steps with process capability and manufacturability in mind

e) Interface to the packaging team to couple the laser chip to the silicon photonic chip

f) Ensure measurement and characterization of the interface is performed to verify that project goals are met


Requirements & Qualifications:

• Masters degree in Engineering, Physics or Chemistry or in a related technical discipline

• 5 years practical experience or PhD plus 3 years practical experience in a modern CMOS fab in a role either in process integration or as a process engineer (in multiple process areas)

• Track record of successful (project) management of a process development in a CMOS, MEMs or photonics field

• General knowledge and overview of a silicon photonics SOI flow and typical active optical devices and how they can be fabricated

• A strong statistical background and practical use of a well known software tool (e.g. JMP, NWA Quality analyst, Minitab, etc)

• Fluent in English (written and spoken)

• Dutch or Chinese language knowledge is a plus
